Office Hysteroscopy
An office hysteroscopy is a procedure that allows your physician to view the inside of your uterus. A hysteroscope is a thin, telescope-like device that is inserted into the uterus through your vagina and cervix. In-office hysteroscopies can be done for many different reasons and can be for diagnosis of a problem and/or treatment of a problem. Some of the typical reasons your physician may decide to perform a hysteroscopy include, but are not limited to:
Abnormal uterine bleeding (i.e., post-menopausal bleeding, heavy periods, spotting between periods, etc.)
Infertility
Repeated miscarriages
Uterine adhesions (bands of scar tissue)
Abnormal growths such as polyps and fibroids
Displaced IUCD
It is best to perform a hysteroscopy during the first or second week after your menstrual period. This allows an optimal view of the interior of your uterus. Hysteroscopy can also be used in conjuntion with other procedures, such as D & C (dilation and curettage) and laparoscopy. Hysteroscopy is a safe, effective way for a physician to view the interior of your uterus.
